Can AI Actually Help You Learn Spoken English?

By PractE · · 5 min read

AI English tutors are everywhere now. Some are apps with pre-set dialogues. Others are voice-based conversation partners powered by large language models. The claims range from “speak fluently in weeks” to “the only practice tool you will ever need.”

Neither is quite right. But something real is happening, and it deserves a clear look rather than either hype or dismissal.

What AI practice actually does well

The strongest case for AI conversation practice is not the technology itself. It is the access problem it solves.

For most English learners, finding a patient and available speaking partner is genuinely difficult. Language tutors cost money and time. Native speakers are not always willing to slow down, repeat themselves, or correct you without losing the thread of the conversation. Fellow learners have their own schedules. The result, for many people, is a week with almost no spoken English practice at all.

An AI speaking partner removes those barriers. It is available at any hour, needs no scheduling, and has no feelings to consider when you make the same mistake for the fifth time. That lower pressure matters. A 2024 systematic review of 57 studies on AI chatbots in English language learning, published in the journal ReCALL, found that AI interaction consistently reduced speaking anxiety and increased learners’ willingness to speak, with the largest effects among learners who reported high anxiety in conversations with other people.

That is a specific and genuinely useful benefit. If anxiety is what has stopped you from practicing, an AI partner removes that friction, and practice can happen where it would not have otherwise.

AI also offers something that most human conversation partners do not deliver consistently: feedback on every sentence. Ava, PractE’s AI tutor, can note a grammar slip or an unclear phrase within seconds, while the sentence you said is still fresh. Most human conversation partners let errors go for the sake of flow. That is kind, and it is also why some errors persist for years.

What AI practice cannot do

The limits are real, and honest AI-based language tools should name them.

A 2024 review in the Annual Review of Applied Linguistics examined how AI tools affect the development of second language listening and speaking. The review found that while AI systems have improved rapidly, they still lack the dynamic adaptability of human conversation: the way a real person reacts to confusion with a frown, adjusts vocabulary when they sense you are lost, shifts topics because of something that happened yesterday, or lets a conversation wander somewhere neither of you planned.

Real conversations are unpredictable in ways AI is not. A human speaking partner might use an idiom you have never heard, push back on something you said more directly than you expected, or ask you something that catches you completely off guard. These moments are inconvenient in the best way: you freeze, you recover, you leave knowing something you did not know before.

AI systems, even very good ones, work by pattern. They respond in ways that are likely and coherent. They are rarely truly surprising. For a nervous beginner, this is exactly what you want. For someone past the early stages, it can become a ceiling. You can grow comfortable with AI-level predictability without growing comfortable with actual human conversation.

There is also the accent question. One of the things that real fluency requires is the ability to adapt to different speakers: faster ones, quieter ones, speakers with regional accents or non-native English of their own. An AI partner typically speaks in a single consistent register. The skill of adjusting to a speaker who sounds different from yesterday’s practice partner is not something you build with one voice.

Why “both” is the honest answer

PractE does not position Ava as a replacement for live group discussions. She is a complement.

Ava is for days when the group feels like too much. For building a specific skill in private before trying it in public. For practice at any hour without needing a scheduling app. She is the right environment when you are just starting out, or when anxiety from a difficult week has lowered your confidence, or when you need twenty minutes of low-stakes conversation to warm up before joining a live room.

The live group discussions are for what Ava cannot provide: real people with unscripted reactions, different voices, and the genuine unpredictability of human exchange. They are the conditions closest to the conversations that actually matter in your life. The two work together the way that training and the real thing always work together. One builds the foundation. The other is what the foundation is for.

What to look for in any AI speaking tool

Not all AI speaking tools are equally useful. A few things worth checking: Does the AI actually speak to you in a natural voice, or does it generate text you read? Does it respond to what you specifically said, or does it move to pre-set prompts regardless of your answer? Does it adjust to your level, or does it use the same vocabulary and pace with everyone?

The more a tool behaves like an actual conversation, the more it prepares you for one. Understanding what the conversations inside PractE look like is a good place to start if you want a clearer picture of how AI moderation and live groups work together.

The best AI tools are honest about what they are: available, patient, and useful. A real step in learning spoken English. The part that comes after is still between you and another person.
